Ice cream van Sound Effect

Few sounds evoke the nostalgic memories of summer as intensely as the jingle of an ice cream truck. It’s sort of the “good news” equivalent of an emergency siren, and in areas where their summer arrival is eagerly awaited, the effect is practically Pavlovian.

Today’s first ice cream truck sound is a field recording from a musician who’s pretty prominent in his own right: Oliver Chesler, aka the Horrorist. He recorded this particular ice cream truck from right out his apartment window, and says that it must be “one of the happiest sounds on the planet”. We hope you feel the same way!

Of course, under the right circumstances, even such a happy little sound can start to take on a sinister edge. That’s what SoundCloud user robbymarshall demonstrates with his “Creepy Ice Cream Truck” sound, recorded with the SoundCloud iPhone app. It’s hard to imagine such a spooky jingle attracting many children, but I guess it does promise ice cream in the summer!
