Ford Aerostar minivan

Mustang 5.0 powered Ford Aerostar custom hot rod minivan

Despite an ever-increasing bureaucracy and rapidly tightening emissions regulations, California still seems to have some of the most exciting automobiles a person could possibly imagine. Like, for example, this one: a 1994 Ford Aerostar that's been turned into a pickup truck. With Dodge Neon hubcaps.

We'll start from the start. For those of you who aren't aware, a Ford Aerostar is a minivan. And not just any minivan: an anteater-shaped minivan with standard rear-wheel drive that was sold from 1986 to 1997. The Aerostar was a competitor to the Chevy Astro and GMC Safari, and it wasn't even really considered very good by the standards of its day. Most minivan rivals had front-wheel drive, and they were a lot easier to maneuver and operate in the city. Not the Aerostar. The Aerostar was rear-wheel-drive. You could get it with all-wheel drive if you really wanted.

Of course, the other thing about the Aerostar is that most of them have disappeared from the rest of the country because they're horrid vehicles and nobody wants anything to do with them. Well, not in California. California is the land of rust-free automobiles and vehicle preservation - even in situations where vehicles shouldn't be preserved. Like, for example, this one, which I spotted last weekend in Los Angeles.

According to its Carfax report, this Aerostar has endured three owners (it was initially a rental car in Richmond, Virginia), and it's been in California since early 1995. The last mileage hit was 150, 000, in 2012, and since then it was designated a "GROSS POLLUTER" by the California DMV. I'm not exactly sure when it was converted into a pickup truck, but I'm certain the conversion was ... well ... a little amateurish. Just look at that ridiculous back window setup. And the fake wood they've added to the sides. And how the bed is lined with a tarp.

Also, the rear bumper appears to be a log.

So this is definitely not the most beautiful Ford pickup truck in existence, but let's be honest: It's interesting. And it's exactly the sort of thing I'm happy to see running around somewhere in Southern California.
