Town N Country minivan

The Town n Country Minivan

Outside noise shouldn’t be a concern when riding in the 2016 Town & Country, as the cabin stays quietly isolated even at cruising speed. The front seats offer plenty of room all around, and kids can easily fit in the last two rows. The second- and third-row seats, however, have deeply reclined seatbacks that may be uncomfortable for adults on longer trips. If you regularly shuttle adults in the back rows, the Honda Odyssey is the best choice in the class.

The Town & Country’s low floor makes it easier for the shorter kids to step up into the vehicle, and the wide door opening can make filling the back with people and gear a little less cumbersome.

Engine Can Be Loud, but Has Plenty of Power

A standard V6 engine that makes 283 horsepower provides more than enough strength to move the Town & Country around, even if it’s loaded with cargo and passengers. However, it can’t match the quiet refinement of competitors’ powertrains, like the Honda Odyssey. Plus, the Town & Country’s six-speed automatic transmission could shift quicker and more precisely. Still, among minivans, only the Dodge Grand Caravan has as much horsepower as the Town & Country.

Lackluster Gas Mileage

The Town & Country returns 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway; those numbers are on the lower end for the class. If fuel economy is a priority, the Nissan Quest (20 city, 27 highway) and Honda Odyssey (19 city, 28 highway) are the best options.

Ride and Handling Draw Mixed Reviews

Some professional test drivers report that the Town & Country handles with poise and has sharp steering, while others note that it suffers from considerable body lean through turns. Opinions on ride quality also vary. Some automotive journalists praise Chrysler’s minivan for its smooth ride, but others complain that the Town & Country doesn’t protect occupants well from the impacts of bumpy roads.

With little consensus from reviewers, make sure you test-drive the Town & Country to find out if its dynamics and ride quality suit you. The automotive press agrees that the Honda Odyssey delivers sharp handling for the class, as well as a smooth ride, so it’s a safer bet to meet your needs in these areas.

Town & Country Pricing, Options, and Trims

The base Town & Country LX ($29, 995) comes with a 283-horsepower V6 engine, an automatic transmission, front-wheel drive, power-sliding rear doors, an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports.

Touring models ($31, 875) come standard with an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a second-row DVD entertainment system with a 9-inch screen and wireless headphones.

The Town & Country S ($34, 145) comes with a performance-tuned suspension, leather upholstery, and a DVD entertainment system for the third row as well as the second row.

Two packages are optional with Touring and S models: The Driver Convenience Group ($995) adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry, and push-button start, while blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and rear cross traffic alert are available as part of the Safetytec package ($1, 945).

The Touring L ($35, 845) doesn’t have the S model’s performance-tuned suspension or third-row DVD system, but it comes standard with remote start, rear window shades, and the Safetytec package. The dual-screen DVD entertainment system is a $1, 295 option.

The Limited ($38, 445) has all of the Touring-L's features, plus keyless entry, push-button start, an upgraded center console, navigation, heated front and second row seats, and power-folding and reclining third-row seats.

Top-of-the-line Limited Platinum models ($40, 645) come standard with most of the above features and adds a sunroof, a heated steering wheel, upgraded leather upholstery, and a nine-speaker audio system.

Town & Country Safety and Reliability

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Town & Country earned the best possible rating of Good in four of the five crash tests. However, in the small overlap front crash test, which simulates when the front driver’s-side corner of the vehicle collides with a fixed object like a tree or barricade, the Town & Country received the worst possible rating of Poor. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration testing, the Town & Country is rated at a perfect five stars for side crash protection, and four stars for front crash and rollover protection. Top safety scores in the class belong to the Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona.

The Town & Country comes standard with a rearview camera, while blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are available. Missing from Chrysler’s options list are additional driver-assistance technologies like lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control, which are available on some alternatives like the Odyssey, Sedona, and Toyota Sienna.

In terms of reliability, the Town & Country’s predicted rating is above average for the class. The 2016 Town & Country is covered by a three-year/36, 000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/100, 000-mile powertrain warranty.

Other Minivans to Consider

Fuel-conscious buyers will appreciate the Honda Odyssey’s excellent gas mileage of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. It’s a standout in terms of performance as well, with plentiful power, sharp steering, composed handling, and a comfortable ride. Inside, the Odyssey has more cargo space than the Town & Country, but unlike Chrysler’s minivan, the Odyssey’s second-row seats are heavy and cumbersome to remove, making that cavernous cargo space harder to access. The second row is very spacious and comfortable though, even for adults. Numerous family-friendly features are available, which helped the Odyssey win the 2016 Best Minivan for Families award. It’s also the 2016 Best Minivan for the Money thanks to its combination of quality and long-term value.

The Toyota Sienna has ample power, a smooth ride, and it’s available with all-wheel drive, a rarity for a minivan. The cabin features lots of upscale materials, and the higher trims are especially premium. Adults will be very comfortable in the Sienna’s rear seat, as the optional second-row lounge chairs are among the most comfortable in the class. The Sienna offers more cargo space than the Town & Country, and its power-folding third row and easily removable second row make it a breeze to use that space. Up front, the Sienna’s infotainment system is very user-friendly.

The 2016 Chrysler Town & Country has seats for seven people in three rows and comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The Town & Country is available in six trims: LX, Touring, S, Touring-L, Limited, and Platinum. Since the Chrysler Town & Country was last fully redesigned in 2008 and sees few changes for this year, this overview uses applicable research and reviews from the 2008 through 2016 model years.

Standard features include power-sliding rear doors, a rearview camera, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen.
